ABOUT LEWISTOWN, MONTANA
The first permanent settlement in the area was established in 1879 by 25 Métis families, who were descended from marriages between French Canadians and Indigenous peoples. The town's modern history began in 1874 with the establishment of Camp Lewis, a temporary military post named after Major W.H. Lewis. The name "Lewistown" may have come from the camp. Lewistown was incorporated as a city in 1899.

Lewistown was founded in 1873 as a trading post on the Carroll Trail and was originally called Reed's Fort after Major A.S. Reed. In 1899, the town was renamed after Major William H. Lewis, who established a fort nearby in 1876. Lewistown was also the site of an 1880s gold rush and was an important railway destination.
