ABOUT LEWISTOWN, MONTANA
The first permanent settlement in the area was established in 1879 by 25 Métis families, who were descended from marriages between French Canadians and Indigenous peoples. The town's modern history began in 1874 with the establishment of Camp Lewis, a temporary military post named after Major W.H. Lewis. The name "Lewistown" may have come from the camp. Lewistown was incorporated as a city in 1899. Lewistown was founded in 1873 as a trading post on the Carroll Trail and was originally called Reed's Fort after Major A.S. Reed. In 1899, the town was renamed after Major William H. Lewis, who established a fort nearby in 1876. Lewistown was also the site of an 1880s gold rush and was an important railway destination. ARCHITECTURE Lewistown is known as the City of Stone because its original settlers were Croatian stone masons. The town's five historic districts feature beautiful architecture built by early residents. NATURAL BEAUTY Lewistown is surrounded by five mountain ranges, including the Judiths, the Snowies, the Belts, the Moccasins, and the Highwoods. The area also features rolling prairie, farms, and ranches, as well as access to public lands, lakes, rivers, streams, and mountains. ACTIVITIES Lewistown is a family-friendly destination that offers many activities and events throughout the year, including fishing, hunting, hiking, and biking. EVENTS Lewistown hosts many popular events, including the Montana Winter Fair, Saturday Farmers Market, Charlie Russell Chew Choo Dinner Train, Chokecherry Festival, Parades, Shakespeare in the Park, Centerfest Music Festival and much more! |
